The Era of Name Change via E-Government has Begun<\/b><\/font><\/span><\/p><\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

As a result of the amendment made in the Population Services Law numbered 5490 on October 17, 2017, individuals were allowed to change their names once without the need for a court decision, provided that they apply in writing to the civil registry office where their place of residence is located within two years. This amendment enabled changes to names and surnames that were contrary to Article 3 of the Surname Law or resulted from spelling or punctuation errors or changes in meaning due to the use of correction marks. The decision for such changes could be made by the provincial and district administrative boards without the requirement of a court decision.<\/p>

On December 6, 2019, with the Law Amending Some Laws and Decree Laws numbered 375, the temporary article added to the Population Services Law numbered 5490 was extended for another 3 years. Additionally, it was stipulated that if there is a need to extend the period again upon the expiration of the period determined for the validity of the article, the extension could be made by the Presidency without the need for a legal amendment. Furthermore, with the new provision added to the article, it was stated that names deemed inappropriate for general morality and ridiculed by society could be changed by provincial or district administrative boards without the need for a court decision.<\/p>

Last year, a new feature was added to the e-Government application used by millions of people.<\/strong><\/p>

There is no longer a need to go to court for a name change. With the recent official announcement made by the General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs, those who want to change their first or last name can now do so through the e-Government portal without dealing with the court process.<\/p>
